The chaos at the Capitol on January 6th inspired me to sit down and start singing. There are two Americas; One, the haunted house of horrors that conceals a myriad of murders in her tainted bosom; The other, a land of boundless grace, where wheat fields wave and dust clouds roll, peopled by rambling gamblers, outlaws, poets, the archetypes of the ages, all linked together through an unbroken chain of song. When I think of the "greatness" of America, this is what I imagine, not her cruelty, derision or bloodless automatism. These are songs that flew in the face of fascism, Jim Crow, segregation and degradation to usher in a new dream of freedom for a million starstruck wanderers. I wanted to sit down with these reminders that there was once a place of such infinite possibility as to seem an unvarnished dream. I don't know if there's a way back to that nascent state of innocence, but I do know that art will always trump the ravages of tyrants and the iniquities of wicked men. America may be dying, but her songs will survive her.
